About mango picking jobs

Mango picking jobs across Australia run a hot, well-paid harvest from September to December, starting in the Northern Territory then moving through Queensland and northern Western Australia.

When and where

The season kicks off around Darwin and Katherine in the Northern Territory, then moves through Queensland. Carnarvon and Kununurra in WA also grow mangoes. Work starts early to beat the midday heat.

The work

You pick fruit from ladders or platforms, then sort, grade and pack in the shed. The sap can irritate skin, so cover up. Piece rates on mangoes are strong, which is why pickers put up with the conditions.

The casual minimum is $30.91 per hour. Many picking jobs pay piece rates instead, where faster workers earn more. See our pay rates guide for detail.

Most regional farm work counts toward your 88 days. Check the rules in our 88 days guide.
