About northern territory

The NT fills the gap when southern states go quiet. Mango season around Darwin peaks from September to December. Melon harvest near Katherine runs May to November. Between the two, you can work most of the year in the Territory if you can handle the heat.

It's hot, remote and physically demanding. But the pay reflects that. Fewer people make the trip up, which means less competition for work and growers who are willing to pay for reliable pickers.

The entire NT is classified as a regional area for your 88 days. Every day of farm work here counts toward your visa.

Key Regions

Darwin and Humpty Doo

Mango season around Darwin is legendary. The farms at Humpty Doo, about 40 km south of the city, are the biggest employers. Work starts at 5am to beat the heat. You'll be picking in 35 degrees or hotter, and the humidity is serious. But piece rates on mangoes are strong, making this one of the best-paying seasonal jobs in the country. Darwin itself is a proper city with backpacker hostels, so finding a place to stay is straightforward.

Katherine

About three hours south of Darwin. Melon harvest runs May to November, filling the opposite end of the calendar from mango season. Katherine is a small town, not a city, so sort accommodation before arriving. You can pair Katherine's melon season with Darwin's mango season for close to a full year in the Territory.

Alice Springs

A different world from the tropical north. Alice Springs has a small grape and date industry, with work running February to April. The volumes are much smaller than the Top End, but if you're already in Central Australia, it's worth checking.

Pay

Mango picking pays piece rates, usually per tray or bin. The work is hard but experienced pickers earn $35 to $50 per hour equivalent during peak weeks. Melon work near Katherine is a mix of piece rate and hourly. The casual minimum is $30.91 per hour. Expect higher effective rates on most NT work because of the remote conditions.

Getting Around

You'll need a car for most NT farm work. Darwin to Katherine is about 300 km. Katherine to Alice Springs is another 1,200 km. There's no public transport between towns beyond the Ghan train and occasional Greyhound services. Some Darwin-based mango farms are close enough to the city that you can get by without a car, but having one opens up more options.
