About western australia

Western Australia has two very different farming zones separated by about 4,000 km of outback. The temperate southwest grows apples, pears and wine grapes within a few hours of Perth. The tropical north, up around Carnarvon and Kununurra, grows mangoes, melons and bananas in serious heat.

Which zone suits you depends on what you want. The southwest is more social, closer to Perth, and easier to reach. The north is remote and hot, but the pay tends to be higher because fewer people make the trip.

Key Regions

Donnybrook and Manjimup

Apple and pear country in the southwest, about three hours south of Perth. The season runs January to June, with the biggest volumes in February and March. This is the most accessible farm work region in WA. Some working hostels offer transport to orchards.

Carnarvon

WA's year-round option, about 900 km north of Perth. Bananas and tomatoes grow continuously. Mango picking fills October to December. Carnarvon is a small town and genuinely remote, so you'll want a car and some savings to get set up. Once you're there, work tends to be consistent.

Kununurra and the Ord River

Right up in the Kimberley, closer to Darwin than Perth. Melon and mango work runs May to November. The scenery is unlike anywhere else in Australia, and the pay reflects how few people are willing to make the drive. This is a good option if you want to pair it with NT farm work since Darwin is only about 830 km away.

Margaret River

Wine grape harvest runs February to April. Margaret River is a tourism town, so there's more going on outside work hours than in most farm work regions. The harvest is short but the location makes up for it.

Pay

The casual minimum rate is $30.91 per hour. Apple and pear picking in the southwest is usually paid by the bin. Mango and melon work in the north pays well on piece rates because of the remote conditions. Expect $35 to $45 per hour equivalent for experienced pickers on tropical fruit.

Getting Around

You'll need a car for almost all WA farm work. The distances between towns are massive and public transport outside Perth is limited. Transwa coaches connect Perth to some southwest towns, and you can fly to Kununurra or Carnarvon, but you'll still need wheels once you arrive. Budget for fuel costs, especially in the north where prices run higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a car for farm work in Western Australia?

Yes, for almost all positions. The distances between towns are large and there's limited public transport outside Perth. Some working hostels in Donnybrook offer transport to orchards, but a car gives you access to far more work across the state.

What farm work is available near Perth?

The Swan Valley, about 30 minutes from Perth, has grape and citrus picking from November to April. Gingin, an hour north, has citrus and stone fruit. Donnybrook and Manjimup are about three hours south with the biggest apple orchards in WA.

Is Carnarvon good for year-round farm work?

Yes. Carnarvon's warm climate means bananas, tomatoes and other crops grow continuously. Mango picking runs October to December. The town is remote, about 900 km north of Perth, so come prepared.

How far is Kununurra from Perth?

About 3,200 km by road, roughly a 35-hour drive. Kununurra is actually closer to Darwin (830 km) than to Perth. Most people fly or drive up gradually. Melon and mango work runs May to November.

Kununurra pairs well with the Northern Territory since Darwin is only a day's drive away. Or head east to South Australia for grape harvest in the Barossa and Riverland.
