Casual Field Hands – Mackay

Sugar Research Australia (SRA) is after casual field hands in Mackay, up to 5 days a week, with work running from now through to December 2026 depending on what’s needed.
This is physical, outdoor work in cane fields. Hot, humid, and hands-on.
**What you’ll do**
– Plant sugarcane, and cut cane with a cane knife (often)
– Trim, bundle, carry, and load cane stalks in the field
– Collect samples, including soil, stalk, and leaf
– Work, stand, and walk long distances on uneven ground for long stretches
– Bend, twist, and squat regularly, often under weight
– Other duties as your supervisor directs
**What you’ll need**
– Able to do physical, manual work in very hot and humid conditions
– Physically fit, able to lift bundles of cane (up to 20kg) repeatedly over several hours
– Good attention to detail, able to follow instructions and work safely
– Punctual and reliable
– Committed to safe work practices
– Reliable transport and a current driver’s licence
You’ll need the right to work in Australia. Successful applicants do a medical (functional plus drug and alcohol screening), and visa holders need a VEVO check. This is a good one for Working Holiday makers chasing eligible work toward your 88 days.
